There are many disparities within the current education system in the US that mostly disadvantages the underprivileged communities or individuals in the nation. In most cases, there is a racial issue in the apparent gap that exists between the current education systems, which has also followed the social class structures. Conversely, a comparison of urban and suburban high schools may indicate huge differences in learner experiences and performance.
The first example of the existing disparities can be noted in the facilities of different schools. Whereas students in other schools may have unrestricted access to modern learning equipment for curriculum and co-curriculum needs, their counterparts in other schools lack even the basic implements like books.
They may lack basics like a well-stocked library whereas their rich counterparts go to schools with modern studios and even large telescope domes. Lacks of facilities make students in poor in cognitive skills and imagination, while the other students are able to freely discover their talents. Overall, it has an effect on the performance of students when it comes to real life knowledge and hands on experience.
Secondly, the learning environment in economically underprivileged schools is deplorable. For instance, even the walls are not well maintained. The atmosphere is generally inhospitable for new learners as opposed to urban schools where the school is attractive from the entrance to the classroom arrangement. A poor learning environment has an effect on learner performance in many ways including making students feel like there are in a prison. When schools feel like detention centers, the goal of students may be to try ways of getting out of them instead of opening up to the learning process. Most students are likely to be frustrated and even become violent, which is a great disadvantage.
Third is the difference in levels of motivation among the two school categories. In addition to excellence facilities and hospitable learning environments, rich schools have highly motivating teachers and guidance departments. They are encouraged to take up what they enjoy doing and develop their learning through such choices. Each student is guided individually and not in a group unlike in other schools that are crowded.
When there is lack of motivation in the learning process, cases of school drop outs and below average performance may rise. In this case, students do not see the meaning of learning or the benefit of education in their lives. They may feel that their parents or guardians have just found ways of dumping them in harsh environments where they have to struggle to read endless materials.
In order to bridge the gap noted above, it is important that all education stakeholders invest in schools that still lag behind even in today’s society. The main problem of such institutions is lack of finance and poor management of available funds. The mobilization of private sector organizations and communities to build schools within their localities will help in uplifting them to standards similar to other schools.
Apart from investing in facilities and equipment, it is important that part of the investment be channeled to mentorship programs, which will help in increasing motivation levels in the underprivileged schools. Even with the constant education reforms policy changes in the country, lack of funds will still remain a great challenge if the gap is to be effectively bridged.
